We’ve all heard that familiar refrain from the backseat.
Maybe on the way to grandma’s distant home, or even across town, that whiny tone is almost worse than nails on the chalkboard.
At this point of the year, as school is winding down for many, all of us parents, teachers, counselors and even the kids are beginning to feel that way about summer.
ARE WE THERE YET????
For most of us, the answer is no. We are not there yet, it will be a few more days or weeks until we are free of the classroom and 7 am start times. I can only speak for myself, but I know these last few weeks have felt like I am walking through mud at every turn. We all need to vent from time to time, and after all I’m stressed I need this little release. So even though I’ve found myself complaining about every little thing I didn’t pick up the challenge. And then it happened.
I noticed the kids doing it too.
The bickering, nit picking and whining was more than I could take.
It was around that time a few weeks ago, my niece shared a picture of a purple bracelet on her wrist, with a note that she was going 30 days without complaining. How clever I thought.
And then I moved on.
Back to complaining, feeling drained, uninspired, exhausted and some other negative feelings I’ll spare you from hearing.
Then a few days ago, my sister was working with a sports psychologist and he shared some brain research that described the impact that frustration has on us. He said there is now data to suggest that frustration triggers a response from the amygdala which in turn has a domino effect that can do anything from shutting down our creative juices to making us more angry for the rest of the day.
Okay universe, I hear you.
So I consulted my friend google and looked a little closer at the no complain challenge and decided to give it a whirl.
The book, A Complaint Free World, by Will Bowen, challenges you to go 21 consecutive days without complaining, using the purple bracelet as a reminder. He shares a crazy stat that was hard to swallow.
78% of workers waste 4-5 hours per week listening to complaining.
Had I not spent my fair share of time in break rooms and hallways doing this, I might of thought it was an exaggeration, but honestly, I think it’s pretty true. Educators, especially at this time of year, feeling drained are more likely to be frustrated by last minute requests for extra credit or extra hours grading final exams, and that negativity spills over into other areas of life. Before you know it we are wasting hours and days being miserable. As a busy professional, building a business and raising a family I don’t have time to waste. And I really had noticed less creative energy. The strain of my neck and clinched jaw weren’t very pleasant either.
So, I created this little simple challenge to help people practice a little positive psychology, by increasing pleasurable thoughts and activities as a method of replacing the complaining that you’re involved in already.
